Water Storage and Purification

You cannot live without water, period. Keeping a minimum of 1 gallon of water per person per day is a good standard. Best practice is to include 2 different methods of water filtration in your kit just in case. Try to keep your minimum 72 hour water supply per person in movable form like 5 gallon water cans as it's not easy to move a 55 gallon drum during an evacuation... think ahead ;o)

Never store water in non certified potable water jugs or containers. Cross contamination can lead to extreme sickness and/or death so be smart and purchase a certified product. Also remember to rotate your water storage so you don't find yourself in an emergency with stale water.

There are several non mechanical ways of purifying water in an emergency situation as well. Always ensure you follow proper procedures and have reference material to follow during an emergency.

Boiling: This method kills most disease causing bacteria. Boil the water at a full rolling boil for a minimum of 1 minute.

Household Bleach:Not as effective as boiling, but kills some bacteria and can be used in an emergency. The bleach must contain chlorine and not be scented. Use 1 teaspoon or 8 drops of 4-6% bleach per 1 gallon of water. Stir and let sit for 30 mins.

Potassium Permanganate (KMn04):Purchased at most camping supply stores, use 3-4 crystals per quart, water will be slightly pink. Let stand for 30 mins.

There are many others such as iodine, commercial tablets and SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection) to name a few. Each have their place depending on water source and situation. Remember to be safe.
